This article tells about the disease called endometriosis. Endometriosis is a common and chronic gynecological and immunological disease that can result in pelvic pain that can be seen under the teaching-microscope. By definition, endometriosis is a painful condition where tissues, that somewhat resemble the lining of the uterus, is found in other places in the body. These tissues are usually in the pelvis. Endometriosis is also commonly found on the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines. They can also be found in the vagina, cervix, and bladder. The article explains that these misplaced microscopic cells form growths that can respond to ovarian hormones by producing secretions. This can then at times result to problems like inflammation and bleeding. The outcome of such condition includes pain, infertility, scar tissue formation, and bowel problems.

Common symptoms of the disease endometriosis include pain during the menstrual flow. Patients may also complain of pain that goes away from the menstrual flow. Other common symptoms of the disease include pain with intercourse or tampon insertion and painful bowel movements. Patients as sharp can characteristically describe the kind of pain, stinging, burning or knifelike. Less common symptoms of the disease can include fatigue, pain with urination, and irritable bowel symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Although a gynecologist may be suspicious that a patient has endometriosis, surgery is often required for diagnosis. The disease endometriosis is the most common cause of pelvic pain. However, it is important to note that it is not the only cause. Even with no endometriosis in the pelvis, the uterus can still cramp severely, or the ovaries can still be painful from cysts or ovulation.

The cause of the disease endometriosis remains under debate until now. More plausible theories today are linked with the disease. Researchers suggest that the disease may be embryologically patterned from the moment of conception to occur at certain pelvic sites with certain degrees of activity. It is not a type of cancer. It is also not a sexually transmitted disease as some might think.

Treatments for the disease may include medicines such as birth control pills, GnRH agonists, testosterone derivatives and progesterones. They can all be given to try to control the symptoms. Medicine however does not eradicate the disease. It dos not improve fertility either so surgery really is often the treatment of choice for the said disease. In the surgical procedure, surgeons may try to destroy endometriosis in several ways, such as burning at it with laser or electrocoagulation, or cutting it out of the body with scissors or lasers. This procedure can usually be performed through small incisions by laparoscopy. The severe cases may require opening the abdomen by a laparotomy. Endometriosis can be cured by surgery with the aid of teaching-microscope in most women if all the disease is removed. The surgery also improves fertility. The article adds that the total removal of the uterus, tubes and ovaries does not make endometriosis go away. However, this procedure can relieve many types of pelvic pain, especially when all endometriosis is removed at the same time with the aid of teaching-microscope. Read more on this subject
